
Breathing!
Pranayama is a Sanskrit term that translates to “breath control” and is often referenced in yoga and mediation practices. As a practice, it facilitates many different breath work exercises that can be used for a variety purposes. It is a wonderful tool to work with as your breath is something that is always with you so no matter where you are you have it to turn to.
Breathwork can benefit any and everyone. We all have some level of dysfunctional breathing pattern that has become habitual. Studies have shown that as few as 5 minutes of daily breathwork for a month can improve mood and reduce anxiety. Additionally, for those with hypertension, adding 15 minutes of breath work a few times a week showed a large decrease in blood pressure. Breathwork can also impact how we feel in our body and how well our body and mind can regulate.
Our engagement with breath is truly amazing – it is something that keeps us alive and functioning without requiring conscious thought. However, we can impact and improve breathing patterns unlike the rest of our other autonomic functions.
By choosing to actively engage with our breathing patterns, we can utilize it as a tool to improve our health and overall well-being.
We can use breathwork to aid in increasing feelings of calmness and focus or we can use it to increase energy. We can use it to survey our inner thoughts and feelings as well as to better understand our bodies. Breathwork can be used to probe and explore our current mental, emotional, physical and spiritual states. By learning to engage with our breath, our body and our spirit we can improve our ability to create a sense of balance and regulate ourselves more effectively.
Breathwork as a tool that is becoming increasingly important in a world that is becoming more and more deregulating. It can facilitate learning to turn inward during stressful times by increasing the focus on breath help us find a small bit of calm. While we have limited control over most things in the world, we can learn to control how we respond.
